A couple of worthy corkscrews by Avina Wine Tools

I recently received two corkscrews as samples for review from Avina Wine Tools. Avina makes a variety of wine openers and a unique bottle stopper. When it comes to wine accessories, I have a very short list of items I use:

• 2 stage waiter’s corkscrew
• “Ah-so” two prong cork remover for old, delicate corks
• Drip-stop pourers
• Bottle stoppers, for both still and sparkling wine
• Decanter

I’ve owned a number of different corkscrews of various designs, and the only ones I’ve kept are the two stage waiter’s type. Single stage, nope. Two wing handles, nope. Large contraptions making it “easy” to pull corks, no way. You’ve never seen an aerator here, they don’t work.

So how did the Avina corkscrews fare? Pretty good! They have won a spot in my wine opener/stopper drawer. The photos below show a few of the finer points that I liked. (click on any photo to see a full size slide show, escape to return)

The corkscrew comes with a bottle stopper in a very nice presentation box. A nice gift for your local wine geek.

Nice curve and fine teeth do a good job cutting the foil.

A two stage corkscrew means you avoid the extreme angles a single stage can require. Easy to start the cork removal.

You get the cork half-way out.

Then move on to stage two

This isn’t a long cork, even very long corks come out with ease

All set!

One minor complaint – be careful inserting the corkscrew worm, it has a tendency to core out the cork

I preferred the jaguar to the rhino, as the rhino 1st stage has a tendency to cut into the cork

The Avina bottle stopper locks closed. Especially handy if you want to lay the bottle down in the refrigerator.
