French #Winophiles Return to Sud-Ouest (Southwest) France

Explore Sud-Oest (Southwest) France with the French Winophiles on July 15th!
It’s been 2 years since our #Winophiles group first explored the wines of Southwest France. As French wine regions go, it’s near the bottom of the list for familiarity. It’s time to return to further our investigation!

Looking at the map, you might realize that Bordeaux should be included in the region if the regions were being drawn by geography alone, but Bordeaux gets its’ own region thank you very much. The sad but true story is that historically, Bordeaux merchants blocked the shipment of wines from Southwest through Bordeaux as they were trying to eliminate any competition possible. And secretly, many Bordeaux wineries were using grapes or wine from upriver to add to their wines to improve the Bordeaux wines in low production or cool years.

Southwest France – A Puzzle to Find the Wine
Even knowledgeable wine shop employees may not be familiar. In searching for wines in our local wine shops, two of our group were given wines from outside the region, one from the Southern Rhone, one from Languedoc. Close, but no cigar! Your best bet will be to go to a well stocked shop with a list of possible appellations:

  • Cotes de Gascogne
  • Bergerac
  • Madiran (red) & Pacherenc du Vic-Bilh (white) note: is it any wonder we can’t find the wines!
  • Gaillac
  • Jurançon
  • Irouléguy
  • You could even go for Armagnac!

  1. I have barely scratched the surface of this region! I compared Malbecs around the globe a few months ago and included one from Cahors. I will probably try to find another for this post because the others are likely just too obscure for me to find in Ventura!
