Piemonte Brachetto: Sweet, Fizzy and Red! #ItalianFWT

Italian Food Wine & Travel Bloggers Host a Sweet Tooth Search for Brachetto
This month, our group of Italy fans is blogging about an unusual wine from the Piemonte region made from the Brachetto grape. The wine is fizzy, sweet and red! The pinnacle of this wine is Brachetto d’Acqui, but there are sweet Brachetto wines made all over the region. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to see a bunch of great ideas on how to enjoy this sweet treat.

Borgo Maragliano
Borgo Maragliano Winery is a family winery located in the village of Loazzolo, in between Asti, Alba and Acqui Terme. The family history at the winery goes back to 1750, so they know their farm well! One interesting note, in a land of big, dry red wines, Borgo Maragliano specializes in sparkling wines including their Brachetto, but also Moscato d’Asti and dry sparkling wines as well.

Low in alcohol, frizzante and sweet, Brachetto is a unique treat.

Borgo Maragliano Piemonte Brachetto DOC 2011 (oops!) ($17 typical, available online here)
Eye: Clear, frizzante pale tawny in color (oops again!)
Nose: Clean, dried raspberries, strawberries, cranberries, plus a sweet floral element, roses.
Mouth: Medium-sweet, pronounced intensity. Flavors follow the nose with abundant fruit. As a 2011, the brightness of the fruit has faded a bit but the intensity is there. Flavors are simple, but very pleasant. Medium+ acidity balances the sweetness nicely. Body is medium, alcohol is low and finish is medium+.
Conclusions: Overall, a good quality wine offering pleasant fruit in a sweet, frizzante vehicle. Nicely balanced with plenty of acidity to keep the sweetness from being cloying. The wine is definitely past its’ ideal drinking window, but is still pleasant.

Nice video Jeff, and yes that tawny color! Glad the aged sweetie didn’t disappoint.

Are those chocolate dipped pecans I see? I think that is a great pairing choice. I can see why you feel it was past due for this bottle. It is definitely a wine to be enjoyed while it is young.

  6. Who knows what wines lurk in the back corners of a wine cellar. Glad you could salvage this one and join in the fun! Nice video.

Interesting to try an aged version. Even if it’s past the drinking window, it’s always cool to have that experience for context.

A unique treat indeed, Jeff! This is delicious with so many fruits and desserts and the color is gorgeous! Cheers!
