Obscure Grapes Wine Tasting at Pairings in Minnetonka

Pairings Food & Wine is a nice wine shop & bistro restaurant in Minnetonka.   Besides a nice selection of wines in the shop that you take next door to dinner (no corkage!), they have some of the best value wine classes and wine dinners in the Twin Cities.  Tonight, we had a small group at a session called “Wines from Obscure Grapes”.  One of the best things about wine classes at Pairings is that they almost always provide small bites a bit above the ordinary.  For $25, a fine evening with fun people. Troy Sparks was our host and he was both knowledgeable and friendly.  We had a great time!

Our wines tonight:

  • 2011 Kirchmayr Gruner Veltliner
  • 2009 Hook & Ladder Gewurtztraminer
  • 2010 Pierre Gaillard Roussane
  • 2010 Biohof Pratsch Zweigelt
  • 2009 Alodio Mencia Ribeira Sacra, Spain
  • 2009 Salleri de la Tour Nero D’Avola

I had never had any of these particular wines, although I have had wines from some of these grapes.  The Mencia and the Nero D’Avola were brand new to me.  My picks of the night were the Roussane (after it had been open a while) and the Mencia.
